HR Assessments: Are They Actually Important?

HR AssessmentsIf you’re an HR professional in a small to mid-size company you are probably very familiar with wearing multiple hats. Even if you have an established Human Resources team, everyone is still in charge of playing many roles to cover all the bases. In today’s world, HR professionals are having to play a game of keep-up with the constantly changing laws and regulations required for compliance. All it takes is one minor mistake and your company gets hit with a huge lawsuit or penalty. This is why HR Assessments are powerful tools for reducing liability exposure.

Let’s start by clarifying what an HR Assessment is. Everyone is familiar with tax audits, an HR Assessment is very similar except it is dealing with your greatest asset, the people.  Sometimes referred to as HR Audits because it’s the exact same process as any audit. An HR Assessment looks at the current state of your HR department.  Determines where things are running smoothly and where you need help. It allows you to press the restart button and outline the steps that need to be taken to ensure your company’s HR department is providing the most effective resource in line with your organization’s unique strategies..

The overall purpose of an HR Assessment is to identify the strengths and weaknesses within your HR foundation and infrastructure even for departments of one, based upon the strategic goals of your organization.  Assessments provide that layer of security that is critical for efficiency. How often should they be done?  At minimum, every two years and of course whenever there is a growth in your organization’s workforce and post changes in political administrations.  Depending upon the organization’s size and compliance requirements it never hurts to conduct  mini-assessments throughout the year to double check and make sure nothing has accidentally fallen through the cracks.
